The paper by Barut and Bracken, PhysRev D23,2454(1981) describes the intrinsic motion of an electron as that of a harmonic oscillllator in curved space of SO(5) symmetry. Their set of equations (69) when supplemented by the relation between the Bohr magneton and the electron Compton wavelength establishes that the product of the rest mass times the Compton wavelength squared divided by the Bohr magneton should result in a combination of constants of nature. This same result has been independently reached by O F Schilling, Journal of Modern Physics 4(9),1189(2013)( http://www.scirp.org) in a phenomenological model, leading to the conclusion that the electron mass has electrodynamic origin. The present note is being written to divulgue my new work on this subject available as viXra 1511.0005v2( http://vixra.org/abs/1511.0005). We show that the phenomenological theory of the 2013 paper can be regarded as an alternative version ( less mathematical!) to Barut and Brackens´s approach, based upon the principle of gauge invariance. The extension of the method to the nucleons ( already in the 2013 paper) arises quite naturally from the application to the electron when gauge invariance is imposed also to the charged quarks in the nucleons. This new paper in fact stresses the points of contact of the proposed model with previous theoretical work by other authors.
